Portland Thorns forward Alex Morgan has been named NWSL player of the week.
Morgan scored two goals and added an assist as the Thorns crushed the Washington Spirit 6-1 on the road Saturday.
The forward scored her first goal in the 11th minute when she headed in a ball following a series of shots in the box. Morgan, then, scored her second goal in the 71st minute when she intercepted a clearance by Washington goalkeeper Chantel Jones and chipped the ball into the net.
Morgan’s assist came in the fifth minute of the match when she found Christine Sinclair in the box. Sinclair easily put the ball into the left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Two days before Morgan’s two-goal performance against Washington, she scored two goals for the U.S. women’s national team in a friendly against France.
Morgan missed the first nine games of the NWSL season as she recovered from a stress reaction in her ankle. She made her season debut in a match against the Western New York Flash on June 7.
This is the second consecutive week that a Thorns player has been named NWSL player of the week. Midfielder Veronica Boquete received the honor last week for an exceptional performance at Providence Park against the Washington Spirit.
